COURTHOUSE

Project no.1

Courthouse is a newly added fourth year, second semester project that challenged the mines of the students on presence and serenity. Adding to the justice system that Barbados already have or may have been lacking. This project came about our fourth year study tour trip to Bridgetown, Barbados, after clearly studying the town and surrounding environs.

I choose to do a high court (court of final appeals) which is the highest court for Bridgetown, Barbados. My concept was inspired by the formation of Barbados which was the connection of two tectonic plates, which brought my attention to the north coast where I found a rock formation called (Bathsheba). Using Bathsheba as the basis for my design I started doing overlays and analysis of rock formations and tectonic movements. I began my design process by analyzing my site given (site 4), by examining the climate, vehicular and pedestrian traffic, public and private entrances, sun studies etc. Because I choose to design a High Court, security was a major factor to consider, so I wanted my building to have a sense of justice but also has transparency. On the outside the building is protected by the carefully placed wing-walls but on the inside has a more open feeling helped by the courtyard and atrium created.

Morphosis Architects had a very big impact on my design process both there design approaches and materiality where used as precedence for this project.
